Step 2: Develop a Vision Statement

It's important to develop a clear vision statement before you begin business planning.
- You'll need paper, a pen, and about 30 minutes.
- Be as open and honest with yourself as possible. Only list the things that you really want for your life, not what society defines as success.
- Don't limit yourself. Ignore the inner voice that says, “that's too much,” “I don't deserve that,” or “I could never accomplish that.”
- Include as much detail as possible. Avoid generalities like, “I'm healthy” or “I'm rich.” Write about your profession, hobbies, where you live, where you vacation, and so forth.
- Include at least five areas of your life. These could include your health, income, relationships, family, spirituality, career, personal growth, education, travel, charity, or lifestyle.
- Write in the present tense.
- “I make $_ per year.”
- “I travel to a new country every year.”
- “I weigh _lbs.”
- “I spend 4 hours a week working with a charity.”
- You can share your vision statement, or keep it private. We recommend that you create a vision board to visually represent your vision statement. Your vision board can be placed in a space that inspires you.
